Beware of Thyroid Disease, Initial Symptoms Often Go Unnoticed

The thyroid is a gland in the front of the neck which is located just below the middle of the throat. Shaped like a butterfly, it is responsible for producing hormones that regulate the body's metabolism.

The thyroid will control the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine to determine the energy needs of the body's cells. These two hormones have a significant influence on almost all vital organs, including breathing, digestion, and the liver.

Thyroid disease can be caused and triggered by several conditions, including iodine deficiency, inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis), genetic factors, post-natal, autoimmune, and disorders of the pituitary gland. Even though it is not contagious, thyroid disorders are a hereditary disease and can occur at any age.

To support the diagnosis of thyroid disease, several tests are usually carried out, one of which is by taking blood samples with the aim of observing and evaluating the function of the thyroid gland. This examination will also determine whether a person has hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
